Adjusting to Terrorism

Prior Situation

In the 21st century, terrorism has continued to develop into a scourge that affects the entire world. Several nations are working to develop countermeasures to reduce the danger posed by terrorist attacks. Terrorism significantly affects any nation since it often leads to the destruction of property and the loss of innocent lives. Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the government of the United States has been working to strengthen the nation’s defenses against foreign invasion by enacting new laws and amending the Constitution. Similarly, the United States of America has made various strategic and technological advancements to stay one step ahead of terrorist organizations. In addition to making different technological and other developments, it is essential to make administrative adjustments inside the agency that oversees criminal justice to combat terrorism in the most efficient manner possible. The criminal justice system in the country is responsible for maintaining the safety of the people in the country by apprehending and prosecuting individuals who are considered a nuisance in the community. In this regard, a variety of adjustments might be implemented within the framework of the country’s criminal justice system to make the fight against terrorism in the country more effective.

Administrative Changes in the Criminal Justice System

The judicial branch, law enforcement, and the correctional system are all sub-branches of the criminal justice agency. Each of the three arms of government works together to reduce the number of criminal cases across the country. Since the 1840s, there has been a substantial shift in the criminal justice system. It has incorporated new and developing concerns prevalent in society to function efficiently. In the wake of the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001, the criminal justice system in those countries underwent major reforms to combat criminal activity in society better. Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, law enforcement agencies nationwide began implementing militarized tactics to reduce crime. Militarization is a method used to combat terrorist activity in a country. It entails the training of law enforcement agents, the wearing of uniforms, the carrying of heavy weapons, and the use of ranks.

Also, the local police department focused more on the enforcement of Homeland Security, which reduced the link between the police force and the citizens of the community they served. Similarly, the judicial system has been confronted with significant cases piling up. The available court officials are overburdened by the continuously growing number of cases. In addition, the judicial system needs more resources, including monetary funds, personnel, and courtrooms. On the other hand, the disciplinary department has been dealing with the issue of offenders being housed in too close of quarters. There has been a recent trend towards incarcerating more people, which has led to an increase in the number of persons housed in facilities already at or near capacity. In the same way as the court and the police department have experienced staffing and funding issues, so has the correctional agency. These issues include a lack of prisons and financial resources.

A variety of administrative adjustments need to be made at the law enforcement agency to effectively combat terrorism in the country. Among these administrative adjustments are several that include. First, the law enforcement agency should implement neighborhood policing rather than concentrating on boosting the number of security employees at the country’s terminal points or the number of firearms available to the police department. The emphasis placed by the police department on cultivating positive relationships with the community members to earn their trust. The police are better able to respond to incidents in the community when they participate in community policing. When compared to the police agency, the members of the community are in a stronger position to identify questionable individuals within the neighborhood. Investing in the community is an excellent option for countering the threat of terrorism in the country. Also, the Department of Criminal Justice needs to allot greater financial resources, which will be of assistance in the battle against terrorism in the country.

The resources that the change would require

Increased cash will allow the police department to hire additional personnel. Several law enforcement department members were let go in the wake of the economic slump that began in 2001. A boost in funding will make it easier for the police department to respond to alarms and keep track of every incident in towns nationwide. In a similar vein, an increase in funding will enable the department of law enforcement to buy the required equipment, such as cutting-edge technology, that will assist in mapping terrorists or terrorist operations that occur within the country.

In addition, it will benefit the police department to hire more qualified officials who are savvy enough in technical matters to plan out and anticipate terrorist actions. Training is another administrative component that the organization dealing with criminal justice should strongly emphasise. It should make certain that there is a specialized law enforcement body that is involved in both the investigation of terrorism in the country and the fight against it. It is the responsibility of the police department to guarantee that the officers have received adequate training on the most recent terrorist tactics. The budget for the law enforcement agency will increase as a result of the tactics that were presented above.

Conclusion

It is imperative that the law enforcement agency include the contemporary police paradigms, such as “smart policing,” into its day-to-day operations. A key component of efficient law enforcement is the collection and examination of the most recent data available on terrorist activity. It lends a hand in overseeing the functioning of modern law enforcement agencies by providing this help. The second alternative is for the police department to implement a strategy of law enforcement that is based on intelligence gathering. Intelligence-based policing is a type of policing that is carried out by the police, and an essential aspect of this type of policing is the identification and resolution of potential threats, such as terrorism.
