The ADDIE model is an instructional design model that the instructional designers and trainers use to develop the courses. The model analyzes, designs, develops, implements, and evaluates educational programs (Spatioti et al., 2022). This research will develop the curriculum for the mental health nursing course. The focus will be on the first phase, the analysis phase.
Course Title: Mental Health in Nursing
Course Level: 1st level—Undergraduate
Problem Identification, Analysis, and Rationale
The mental health issue is a major problem affecting individuals in the community. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2023), more than 1 in five U.S. adults live with mental illnesses. The research also indicates that 1 in five youths aged 13-15 years have had a mental health disorder at one point in their lives. The statistics, therefore, suggest that there is a high prevalence rate of mental health disorders. There are inadequate professionals to help patients with mental health issues (Riva & Serino, 2020). This makes it crucial to introduce mental health in nursing courses.
The rationale for selecting this course is based on the need to teach learners how to identify mental health issues at an early stage and how to manage them. The learners will use the skills and knowledge gained to help apply different coping mechanisms.
Learner Population
The target population of the learning course includes new nurses who have recently completed their bachelor’s of nursing degree. The nurses are unique in the nursing field and are responsible for managing mental health issues among patients. The majority of the individuals are aged 23-30 years. They have a strong commitment to the delivery of quality care for individuals.
The learner population has some background in mental health. In particular, they understand about the presence of mental health conditions in the society. Additionally, some of the individuals have experienced cases of mental health conditions at one point in their lives
The learner population for this course consists of new hires in the local healthcare facility. Most of the population have completed their undergraduate studies in terms of education. The demographic data is as follows:
- Gender—55% male and 45% female.
- 90% have completed their college/university education.
- The majority of the members are from middle-income families.
- Regarding race, 40% are White, 30% are African American, 10% are Asian, and 20% are from other minority races.
- The individuals are all computer literate.
Skills that the Learners Bring to the Course
The population has key skills such as teamwork, which promotes problem-solving and conflict resolution. The learners are also flexible and can adapt to different nursing environments. Another skill the learners possess is critical thinking, which has helped them make strategic decisions in the healthcare sector.
In terms of learning styles, learners prefer visual learning. This style involves taking information visually. They also acknowledge the kinesthetic learning style that prefers learning by doing.
Learning Constraints
Some of the learning constraints that exist include a need for an appropriate examination system, content, and time constraints. There are also limited materials to conduct the learning due to financial constraints. The class will be an in-person course that will involve face-to-face teaching. Some of the limitations include the class length. Due to work commitments, the learners need more time in the classroom.
Up-to-date Information Regarding the Subject Matter
The most up-to-date information about the subject matter is the need to implement patient-centered care in the intervention strategies to manage the condition.
Learning needs assessment
Currently, the learners already know about mental health disorders. They have had a personal experience with the conditions. They now need to understand the patient-centered intervention strategies to manage the issue.
Learning Objectives
- Increase psychiatric and mental health nursing knowledge by 95% through class teaching and group work for the next three months.
- To increase knowledge on methods of mental health promotion and addressing mental health issues by 90% through classwork for the next three months.
- To help learners increase their communication skills by 90% through group work and class activities for the next three months.
- To acquire knowledge to understand and evaluate the mental well-being of individuals through class activities for the next three months.
