A Certain Lady

The theme of Dorothy Parker’s poem A Certain Lady is unrequited love. She talks about her intense emotional bond with her partner and the complicated façade she must maintain to keep them around. The poem tells the story of a woman’s love for a mysterious man. It seems to be a monologue demonstrating how the lady can radiate happiness and enthusiasm near the male. The poem expresses a woman’s steadfastness and worry for her lover. “Eager lips” is how the speaker describes her desire for her cheating spouse. In line with society, women get associated with mysterious men and start to worry about the future of their relationship. I have learned that the mind may trick someone into thinking they are in a phony romantic relationship. I have witnessed individuals clinging to the hope that their disloyal partner will finally see sense in their hearts and act to make amends. Politically speaking, it relates to what I have seen in the political arena, where people wait for leaders to address their problems adequately. They have similar aspirations of a faithful wife for the vanished leaders.

Susan Glaspell’s play Trifles tackles the issue of social injustice that permeates both families and society. It portrays marriage as a rigid institution wherein wives are subservient to their husbands and allow them to be harshly and derisively treated without compromising their self-worth. The statement underscores the notion that women were confined to their homes and that their sacrifices were not appreciated or rewarded for the family and the house. The discrimination women endure and the lack of respect they receive from their male counterparts are reflections of society’s rejection of other people. Political discrimination against women is tolerated due to the harsh nature of humanity. They are seen as less fortunate people who lack the privileges and leadership skills.

In the same way that males oppress women, so do women. The statement illustrates social oppression, “We all go through the same things—it’s just a different kind of the same thing.” I have seen harassment of women regularly in places of employment, places of religion, and other public spaces. Even if the play depicts how fair society is to women, my actions have shown the strength that women display when given the opportunity. In my experience, women manage their groups and male partners more skillfully and with greater social power.

The central theme of Scott Behrens’ short story “Stren” is the experience of maturing and shifting from childhood to adolescence. The protagonist, the twelve-year-old child, is keen to get acceptance and prove his independence. His exchanges with a more mature character, Tomato George, emphasize the importance of accepting who you are and trying to fit in as an adult. The fishing excursion becomes a metaphor for growing up and all of its difficulties, including learning new skills, making decisions, and controlling one’s anger. “I hesitated. I felt valuable after George made me an offer. He made me feel like just another one of his friends, even at twelve. But it was a man’s day; I had put in a lot of effort all day unloading veggies from the van.” Despite his engagement in behaviors that may be considered more mature, the protagonist’s yearning for acceptance and approval is captured in this passage. I have seen many folks battle with the shift to maturity. I have counseled many people on overcoming challenges and sharing with others to avoid self-pity and preserve integrity and bravery.
