Advantages and Disadvantages of E-learning

Efficiency

E-learning’s availability is one of the major benefits it achieves through its multimedia toolbox for lesson delivery. Video lectures, resource sharing, and online test assessment tools based on different learning approaches make the lessons or readings more diverse and lively through combination. The combination of multimedia attracts engagement and addresses the hearers of the visual, sound and interactive styles, catering to the visual, auditory,and interactive learner’s preferences (Chahrazad & Aya, 2023). The flexibility of content delivery enables teachers to assimilate their teaching modalities, making them compatible with the communication capacity of different students.

Affordability

E-learning produces the sharpest cut on education costs, mainly in real estate and transport. Physical classrooms, which are no longer required, and the centralized educational infrastructure, become unnecessary, eliminating real estate costs (Fu et al., 2018). This leads to the reduction of overhead costs, which in turn makes education more affordable, providing an opportunity to offer learning to most of the members of our society irrespective of their financial capabilities. On top of that, the availability of course materials online is also important in lowering the cost of education. With online study materials, students can choose when they want to study, reducing the need for textbooks and other physical assets.

Less Absenteeism

Focus Deficit

The virtual nature of e-learning is the incentive for the concentration of students on their screens during online classes. Due to the lack of face-to-face class interaction with a teacher and fellow students, a student may be susceptible to dullness, boredom, or distraction, all of which may affect the ability to focus (Soman, 2022). It is no longer the case where fractions, a natural attention anchor in traditional classrooms, plays a significaplayle. Technology Issues

The wide prevalence of technical issues is one of the major challenges that e-learning still faces, especially in regions with finite technical infrastructure, such as small towns. In the case of rising internet communication, network interruptions can cause disturbances in the learning processes, and students could get in trouble. Inconsistent reliable internet access can determine disparities in education opportunities, resulting in poorer students doing worse than their peers based in urban areas. Therefore, a concerted effort focused on tech development in small towns is required to accomplish this in order to ensure a constant and stable internet connection.

Lack of Social Interaction

In online learning, a student experiences less physical interaction than in-class learning, where the necessity of physical presence is of utmost importance. According to Bower et al. (2017), communication of social learning, lack of peers,and interaction in a virtual environment may be the most important factors that influence the development of students. The interaction of peers lays a firm foundation for communication, teamwork, and emotional intelligence development – these are the traits that are necessities for an individual’s and professional development.

Undoubtedly, the educational landscape has transformed radically, whether through e-learning or not, as it provides clear benefits, like high efficiency, affordability, decreased absenteeism, and reaching a wide audience. However, it is crucial to recognize and overcome the obstacles presented by e-learning, such as the likelihood that it does not suit every particular way of thinking, difficulties concerning focus and applicable technology, and the depletion of the real practice of offline society. Confronting these obstacles calls for a complex methodology; if there is one, a hybrid learning model has proved to offer a possible approach. A blended model leads to an opportunity to combine the pros of traditional education, which is packed with face-to-face communication, space to have a go, and trial and error while discovering how to learn, with the flexibility and accessibility offered by online learning.
