Enhancing Educational Equity: Improving Schools for Latinx Students

Abstract

This writing discusses the difficulties faced by Spanish-speaking students, an underrepresented ethnic group that falls into the education system, and suggests ways of improving their educational journey. Historical Background of Latinx Education

Latinx or Hispanic students have a very interesting, complicated and vibrant history with the American educational system, which has been influenced for many centuries by the systemic barriers and injustice that forms part of it. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Latinxs were split into segregated schools with inferior educational institutions. This made educational inequality perpetual. Considering both the previous analysis and the suggestions that follow, there are the following recommendations that are made to the best efforts to enable schools to serve Latinx students better. Enhancing schools to cater to the needs of Latinx students entails a diversified approach. To start with, teachers’ professional training should consider the inclusion of cultural competence, equity, and diversity in order for them to be able to subject their students to the Latinx community. Firstly, it is essential to raise awareness in regards to hiring and retaining more Latinx teachers to ensure balanced and culturally sensitive representation and provide students with such role models. The creation and application of anti-bias policies and culturally responsive discipline processes will decrease the potential oppression of Latinx students and allow them to feel comfortable in the school environment. A more equitable distribution of resources to the schools with a bigger sum of Latinx students is also needed to eliminate the existing uneven funding of schools.
