Part 1: Change Process and Leadership in Nursing
Analyze how nurse leaders can use the change process effectively to realize a vision.
In today’s dynamic healthcare environment, influential nurse leaders are invaluable resources to guide their teams correctly. Their primary role is to skillfully direct the change while ensuring it conforms with a vision of tomorrow. To inspire and motivate team members to welcome change is a trait of the visionary leader, who can foresee revolutionary possibilities. The main trait of this type of leadership is sharing an inspiring vision that unifies the nurses in a single cause.
According to Sulosaari et al., 2022, strong nursing leadership is essential to bring about the desired changes in the healthcare systems. Uncertainty and evolving healthcare needs require a leader with vision who can inspire trust to be optimistic about the future. Like a lighthouse, their strategic leadership guides the way to a better tomorrow.
Moreover, the CEO Publication of LinkedIn 2023 argues that practical leadership hallmarks are motivating teams, managing and delegating responsibilities, listening to criticism, and adapting to changing circumstances. These leaders inspire their teams to be proud of the change by sharing information openly and giving constructive criticism. Thus, the probability increases that members of this team can rapidly adapt to new practices and innovations, which results in improved quality of patient care and organizational performance. A nurse leader with a vision creates an environment of standards and regular improvement throughout the nursing team and beyond current challenges associated with change.
Part 2: “Why Good Leaders Make you Feel Safe” Reflection
Recent Example of Embracing Change
Our department has recently implemented a new EHR system in the clinical environment. But my initial apprehension was the learning curve – when warming up to it, I realized how much better patient care could have been and by which way mistakes would be reduced. As long as the main problems were fixed, I found positive healthcare delivery efficiency and quality results.
Dangers Nurses Face in the Workplace
Recurring risks such as burnout, staffing issues, and lack of resources destroy nurses’ job satisfaction, patient care quality, and their situation. Thus, organizational support coupled with structural changes is imperative to overcome the mentioned barriers and keep the nursing workforce competent.
Pros and Cons of a Leader Making Employees Feel Safe
As leaders endeavor to create an atmosphere whereby everyone feels safe, the number of willing people to work together increases with team morale and trust. But it is not all butterflies and unicorns; more comfort may make one lazy or even cause one to fight change when necessary. Then, the right balance is maintaining a productive environment without flexibility and creativity.
Concept of Lifetime Employment in Nursing
The dynamic nature of the healthcare industry creates difficulties for nurses who do a lifetime job. However, some nurses may stay in one facility as long as they want. This dedication highlights the various causes contributing to extending a nursing career developed based on personal conditions or a supportive working environment and job satisfaction.
Example of a Supportive or Unsupportive Leader
In a bid to perform the difficult task, I was helped by one who is an actual leader, for he advanced the trust and safety of team members through knowledge that included tools, too. Nevertheless, a lack of confidence and a hostile workplace that developed due to an unaccommodating superior created some challenges in teamwork. This comparison, in turn, demonstrates how different leadership approaches affect the work atmosphere and employees’ quality of life.
