Introduction
Stepping into the Communication program at San Jose State University (SJSU), I embarked on an interesting journey of exploration. I aim to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles underlying academic, personal, and professional experiences. Renowned for its rich history and steadfast commitment to academic excellence, SJSU beckons students to dive headfirst into the bedrock values that chart its mission. The university’s philosophy is encapsulated in four distinct cornerstones: democracy, diversity, technology, and globalization. These cornerstones serve as the bedrock upon which SJSU’s educational framework is built, shaping not only the curriculum but also the campus culture and the collective aspirations of its community. In my quest to unravel the essence of these cornerstones, I am drawn to “diversity” as the cornerstone that resonates most profoundly with my academic interests and my vision for personal growth. The choice of “diversity” as my cornerstone of exploration is not arbitrary but rather a deliberate decision rooted in its paramount significance in today’s interconnected world. Understanding the complexities and hints of diverse communication dynamics is essential as a communication student. In an era marked by globalization, where our interactions transcend geographical boundaries, navigating diverse perspectives and engaging in cross-cultural dialogue is an indispensable skill.

Exploring the Communication Studies department, I discovered that diversity is integral to the curriculum and research endeavors. Courses within the department address topics related to intercultural Communication, gender and Communication, and communication in diverse communities, providing students with the tools to navigate communication challenges in a multicultural society (Communication Studies About Us). The department also hosts student organizations such as the Communication Society, which promotes diversity and inclusivity through its activities and events (Communication Studies About Us).
The students’ life at SJSU thrives on the rich tapestry of its diverse student body, which infuses the university with a dynamic and multicultural atmosphere (SJSU Campus Life). SJSU knows how important it is for its students to feel like they belong, so it has a lot of culture and affinity groups for them to join. Students run groups that bring people from different backgrounds together to celebrate and learn more about their culture and identity. They allow students to have open discussions, share their experiences, and learn from one another. This creates a rich mix of different points of view that adds to the overall learning experience at SJSU. Students’ lives are more than just a list of school activities in this environment. Instead, they are a rich mosaic of cultural interactions and personal growth that shows how different and connected the world is.
Reflection
The “diversity” cornerstone fits my academic goals and aspirations at SJSU, where I study Communication Studies. My academic path is closely related to this cornerstone because I want to learn more about how speech works in different places and situations. In our increasingly connected world, it’s important to be sensitive to other cultures, have respect, and understand different points of view to communicate well. Through the diversity cornerstone, I aim to improve my communication skills and learn to value the richness of people from different backgrounds and countries more. I want to take classes on intercultural communication, identity, and how communication makes people feel welcome. I want to do more in school than get my Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies. I want to graduate school and study diversity and communication to add to the field’s knowledge and help people from different backgrounds better understand each other. I want to join clubs and activities outside of school that celebrate diversity and urge students from different cultures to talk to each other.
In conclusion, my investigation of the “diversity” pillar in the Communication Studies department at SJSU will show me how important diversity is to both my academic path and the university’s goal. As I progress in my studies, I’m excited to take on the challenges and opportunities of promoting effective communication in our diverse and interconnected world, led by the values of inclusion and cultural understanding that comprise the diversity cornerstone.
