The parental effect on a child’s growth is quite significant. The primary predictor of a person’s overall personality is the influence that families and parents have on children. Several studies support the information that, in addition to other factors, parental styles significantly affect a kid’s behaviour and educational progress. There are three distinct parenting methods which determine the personality of an individual, and this includes; Permissive, Authoritarian and Authoritative.
According to Roy Choudhury & Roy, 2021 Parenting practices affect teenagers and their academic performance more than is sometimes thought. Additionally, it has a significant impact on how people drink. Authoritative parenting indicates improved outcomes for children’s development. The fact that it offers the child a loving, caring, and supportive atmosphere to thrive is one of the reasons why most of the research reveals that it has positive outcomes for others. Additionally, their kids who have supporting personalities can rely on them for support during trying times, making it more straightforward for them to explore and express themselves. The study revealed that authoritarian and permissive styles did not promote children’s development and therefore did not promote academic accomplishment.
Furthermore, being authoritative was helpful even in reducing drinking since it allowed parents to keep a close eye on their kids without stifling their independence with unreasonable rules. Alcohol usage and drinking behaviour are directly associated when the permissive method is practised. Any person’s whole development is significantly impacted by the parenting style they receive. The best practical parenting approach for young adult lives is authoritative parenting(Roy Choudhury & Roy, 2021).
Individuals who grow up in a strict household are more likely to struggle with poor decision-making, low self-esteem, poor social and academic aptitude, low creativity, depression, behavioural problems, fear of failure, emotional repression, and difficulty managing unpleasant emotions. Lack of self-control and the growth of selfish conduct are two impacts of a permissive style. Negligent parenting frequently causes youngsters to act out more. According to the study, having an authoritative parenting style is significantly and favourably correlated with extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness (Asbari et al., 2020). These four characteristics are more prevalent in young people as their parents’ level of parental authority increases. Parents who exercise more parental authority tend to create children with stronger personalities. Children of authoritative parents tend to be kinder, affectionate, goal-oriented, energetic, and open to new experiences while less anxious or unhappy.
Additionally, a recent study demonstrates that parents who use a high and moderately strict parenting style have a favourable effect on children’s personalities. Elementary students in comparison to parents who are less in charge. Additionally, this study found that Parents using the permissive style try to fulfil every need and want of their children. Still, they rarely ask them to control inappropriate and violent behaviours, which is often negative.
The findings of both studies indicate that an authoritative parenting style positively benefits elementary children’s personality development. When parents adopt a positive parenting approach, their kids will grow up resilient, warm, practical, friendly, emotionally more robust, and creative. These children will be more open to novel situations and eager to meet new individuals. They’ll be more social, more effective, and goal-oriented. They will be able to grow strong and healthy bodies, minds, and personalities as a result.
