With the increase in industrial activities came an influx of immigrants looking for job prospects. Nevertheless, despite the overall economic development, several labourers were subjected to exploitative work situations accompanied by insufficient remuneration (Camfield, 2020)[1].Across the country, there was an increase in momentum for both socialist and labour movements as they responded to these tough times, and the formation of trade unions among workers became a way for them to demand better rights and improved working conditions through collective bargaining. Addressing the unequal distribution of power between employers versus workers while demanding just treatment along with equitable compensation was their intention

In the aftermath of World War I, there was great economic uncertainty and social disruption; as Canadian soldiers returned home from active duty overseas, they discovered that scaling back war-based industry meant few jobs for them. With wages taking a dive and the cost of living remaining stagnant, it has become hard to make ends meet.
