Maggy’s prophecies played critical roles in defining the fate of Cersei Lannister the Lord Tywin Lannister, and Joanna Lannister. She had two brothers, Jaime Lannister and Tyrion Lannister. She had many titles, including Queen Dowager, Light of the West, shield of Lannisport, protector of the Realm, and Queen Regent (Martin, Game of the Thrones 423). Cersei is slender-framed, with emerald eyes, graceful, and perceived to be the prettiest woman in the seven kingdoms (Martin, A Dance with Dragons 118). Tywin informed her that she would be betrothed to Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and got married to him to become a queen. She got excited and decided to consult Maggy to predict her future. Maggy gave her three prophecies, all of which came to pass. The prophecies played a critical role in defining Cersei’s character traits and behavior of Cersei.
Prophecies by Maggy the Frog define her behavior and character in the series. Maggy told Cersei that she would marry Robert Baratheon instead of Rhaegar Targaryen, who was the prince. Cersei was pleased because her major interest was to become a queen in the seven kingdoms. Robert Married Cersei as a symbol of unity after Tywin Lannister sacked the King’s landing. The prophecy was fulfilled since Rhaegar Targaryen had already died. Maggy the Frog predicted that Cersei would have 3 children and the King would have 20 children. The prediction made her angry, but she desired to become a queen. In the series, Cersei is seen as thirsting for power and maneuvering around to ensure she protects her family. Despite getting married to the King, she continues to have an affair with Lancel Lannister, Jaime Lannister, and Osfryd Kettleblack.
Cersei practiced an incestuous relationship with her brother Jaime Lannister. The prophecy played a critical role in her relationship with the twin brother. When she was young, they used to sleep together with her brother. Sleeping together with the brother made them start having an affair, and the servant caught them. She was insecure since the prophecy was that she wouldwould not get a child with the King. The prophecy affected her psychology, compelled her to practice extramarital affairs, affairs and got three children with her biological brother Jaime Lannister. The three children’s names include Prince Joffrey Baratheon, Prince Tommen, and Myrcella Baratheon. Maggy prophesied that Cersei will not have children with the King and the King will get children with other women. The prediction made Cersei to be insecure. She knew she could not get children with the King, thus making her have sex with court allies Lancel and her twin brother Jaime Lannister. The prophesy affected her since she could do anything to protect her family. She could manipulate people, chaotically play politics, and abuse power without fear.
Cersei is cunning and a schemer. Maggy the Frog predicted that she would marry the King and become a queen for a short while. Being a queen made Cersei believe that even women have the right to assume power (Martin, A Clash of Kings 201). She believes that women should be given equal rights like men to rule. She complained about the customs which prevented her from taking power. She believed that she was a capable and intelligent person who should assume power in the seven Kingdoms. According to her, she did not need any advice on decision-making or ideologies on implementing administrative functions in the Kingdom. She believes that traditions and customs play a detrimental role in preventing her from ascending to power, thus blaming her gender.
Cersei is portrayed as evil and ruthless (Martin, Game of the Thrones 292). Maggy the Frog had informed her that she would get three children and all would die. Maggy the Frog said, “Gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds.” The witch doctor predicted that Cersei would bury her children when she referred to them as death shrouds. In the prophecy, the King could get 20 bastard children. Cersei killed her bedmaid Melara, who had accompanied her to the witch doctor who could predict her future. Melera wanted to know if she could, Jaime, but the witch doctor replied, “Worms will have your maidenhead. Your death is here tonight, little one. Can you smell her breath? She is very close”. Cersei was having an affair with her brother Jaime Lannister and did not want to marry Melara. Cersei killed Melara by pushing her and drowning her in the well. The prophecy affected Cersei since the witch doctor had predicted that the person responsible for Cersei’s death was close to her.
Cersei is an unhappy and bitter person. Maggy the Frog predicted that Cersei could get replaced by a “younger, more beautiful queen,” which made her distrustful. She thought Sansa could replace her, contributing to her unhappiness and frustrations. She grew violent and developed hatred (Martin, Game of the Thrones 107). She hated Margaery Tyrell as she blew Sept of Baelor, thus eliminating her. Cersei also hated Sansa, whom she could replace her. The prophecy that she could replace a younger and more beautiful girl affected Cersei’s thinking and imagination. She believed that she was vulnerable and could eliminate or torture whoever she believed was a threat to her family. She could try anything possible to ensure her children were protected from enemies.
Cersei is cruel, and she has pride. The most embarrassing thing is that Cersei enjoyed inflicting pain and suffering on whoever she hates (Martin, Game of the Thrones 219). She enjoyed it when her son Joffrey could inflict pain on her brother Tyrion. She hated her brother to the extent she could get content when her son could inflict pain on him. Cersei believed that she was perfect and flawless no matter what, as she considered herself a lioness (Martin, Game of the Thrones 332). She felt that the clothes she was not wearing were not worthy of covering her. She had an overwhelming sense of vanity in her actions for self-gratification. Maggy the Frog predicted her fate, that she would be a queen for a short period.
Cersei children according to the prophecy of Maggy the Frog. Cersei is responsible for killing her children since Joeffrey was killed by poison at the wedding party (Martin, Feast for Crows 44). Oberyn Martell killed Myrcella because it was a revenge mission. Tommen committed suicide after Cersei had orchestrated and planned the mass murder of Margaery Tyrell and Tommen’s wife. Maggy the Frog told Melera in the prophecy that the person who will cause your death is beside them. The prophesy made Cersei feel guilty for the mistakes she would commit in the future (Martin, Feast for Crows 82). The prophecy affected her thinking and behavior. Cersei wanted Bronn killed. She thought that Bronn would use the swords to kill Tommen, which compelled her to recruit Balman and Falyse Stokeworth to kill Bronn. Cersei lived as a frustrated woman thirsty for power and angry (Martin, Game of Thrones 361). Each time she felt her family was being attacked, she could do anything possible to ensure whoever she believed could harm her family got killed.
Cersei is a liar and cunning. She frames Margaery as having committed adultery and treason. She tells a group of men to seduce Margaery and have an affair with her. The group of men tries to seduce Margaery, but they fail. She schemes to get tortured and informs the men to confess that Margaery had seduced them (Martin, A Dance with Dragons 818).
In contrast, she practices infidelity with her brother (Martin, A Storm of Swords 9). Cersei got her three children by having an affair with her biological brother, Jaime Lannister. She practiced incest as she did not want a legitimate heir for the King (Martin, A Clash of Kings 101). She does an abortion for the child of the King, who could have become an heir to the Kingdom. Cersei knew the King had twins with a serving wench whom she ordered to be killed. She killed more bastards as Tyrion interviews Janos Slynt, who confirms that Killings occurred as a result of the instructions issued by Cersei (Martin, A Clash of Kings 137). Cersei is cruel and jealous as she tries to kill Trystane and Jon Snow. Doran unravels Cersei’s plot to kill Trystane, and her brother Tyrion is blamed for the actions (Martin, A Dance with Dragons 634). Doran thwarts the plan to kill Trystane. The prophecy has purely dictated Cersei’s character as she becomes insecure and envious of any action from her people in the Seventh Kingdom.
In summary, Maggy the Frog prophecy has played a key role in explaining and elaborating Cersei’s character traits. The witch predicted that Cersei would get married to the King and not the prince. The prophecy came to pass. She married the King, but they did not have children together. Cersei will kill her children indirectly. The prophecy by Maggy the Frog affected her thinking and behavior as she became cruel, evil, Jealous, and a schemer. One of the prophecies is that she will be a queen for a time, and a younger and more beautiful girl could replace her. Cersei was insecure and felt that people were ready to attack her family. She could do anything to protect her family that involved plots and schemes to kill anybody she felt was a threat to her family. All three prophecies by Maggy the Frog came to pass and played a key role in shaping Cersei’s character and behavior.
