Strategies for Legislative Change

Peer 1: Hello, I understand you are aware of risky healthcare treatments that are controversial and possibly expensive. Can you discuss your understanding of this concept and describe one example?

Peer 2: Controversial treatments usually increase the risks of medical professionals’ negligence or a medical error in the procedure, leading to a negative response from the patient. This standard care deviation contributes to them being accountable for it. If a medical physician acts negligently in a procedure, causing harm, the patient can file a lawsuit for medical malpractice because they deserve the ultimate medical care. In my discussion, I wish to explore In Vitro Fertilization, a medical procedure performed to help people, particularly couples, having challenges in fertilization and conception of a child. It is a procedure that occurs outside the body, specifically in the glass within a laboratory. It entails several steps, and it is reproductive technology used in a wide range.

Benefits of IVF

Peer 1: In Vitro Fertilization is believed to benefit those who undergo the procedure. What do you think are the benefits of In Vitro Fertilization?

Peer 2: In Vitro Fertilization is usually an effective procedure for many couples battling infertility due to factors such as fallopian tube blockages, disorders associated with ovulation, and male infertility. IVF allows genetic screening to identify potential genetic diseases before implantation; thus, prospective parents can choose embryos free from known congenital abnormalities, reducing the risk of passing hereditary diseases to their offspring. The medical procedure also controls conception timing, a beneficial option for people with medical conditions (Lee, J. C. et al., 2023).

Negatives associated with IVF

Peer 1: Besides IVF being a costly medical procedure, what other shortcomings do you know about the medical practice?

Peer 2: Despite the discussed benefits, IVF is a medical procedure with several limitations. The process can be psychologically and emotionally stressful to mind about the entire fertility treatment process, chances of success, and physical procedure demands, which can be stressful and can cause anxiety. The procedure is expensive, creating financial limitations with no guaranteed success. IVF causes physical discomfort because the applied medications, such as stimulation of ovarian hormones, may have side effects such as headaches, mood swings, and bloating (Farquhar, C., 2019).

Advocating for change in state insurance coverage for IVF

Peer 1: Insurance coverage for IVF treatment can be influenced by advocating for legislative change in our state. What strategies do you think are practical to achieve this?

Peer 2: It is challenging to advocate for changes in legislation to influence state insurance coverage for IVF. I can support change through strategies like building strong advocacy coalitions. Using my media platforms and addressing the public in events and gatherings, I can also create public awareness about advocating for change. If I engage and develop relationships with legislators or lawmakers, I may convince them of the benefits of advocating for change. Also, I can promote change in state insurance coverage if I get engaged with supporters of my ideas and support the coalition for monitoring and adapting to my strategy. Finally, it will be effective if I promote legislation by working with legislators and legal experts to develop a bill to change insurance coverage for IVF. (Goldwire Tutt, T., 2021).
