Professional Identity and the Sense of Belonging

Description Of Experience

The story of the “Stone Soup” proves how the art of sharing and cooperation can create a feeling of something in common among people. By inventing the idea of “stone soup,” the crafty traveller persuaded the initially reluctant villagers to offer their resources individually, thus ending up with nourishing and plentiful food for everyone (Stone Soup Shakespeare n.d.). The storyline demonstrates the nature of becoming a nurse, where the strength of teamwork, empathy and cooperation in sharing information and resources helps to provide safe and compassionate care.

Description Of Thoughts And Feelings

The story made me feel amazing, bringing about various good and bad thoughts and feelings. The positive side of this is that I felt a sense of warmth and inspiration through how wonderful of a story collaboration is and how an act of kindness, although so small, ripples and ends up being a widespread good. The traveller’s capacity to be resourceful and his ability to interact with people were episodes that were one with that of a nurse as a facilitator and advocate for their clients (Stone Soup Shakespeare, n.d.). On the other hand, I could also feel some negative emotions and thoughts. I was surprised in the first place and got annoyed by the villagers’ reluctance to accept the offers because it is against the fundamental values of empathy and generosity, which the nurses are supposed to stand for. Besides that, I experienced deep disappointment and realized that this kind of reluctance at a place where healthcare providers are supposed to function collaboratively and supportively should not be there. A fragmented environment would undermine the efforts toward healing and achieving safe treatment.

Evaluation

It is important to remember that any negative thoughts and feelings that I experienced were justifiable, but it is vital to understand the pros and cons of these perspectives. Those negative feelings are thought to arise from the urge for more compassionate and cooperative surroundings with which any person should be pleased. On the other hand, one should realize that individuals may also have legitimate reasons for their initial reluctance, for instance, due to fear, parsimony mentality, and the history of life situations that played a pivotal role in shaping their behaviour. In contrast, even with the temperature, I had positive thoughts and feelings, reflecting survival, empathy, and effective communication. The traveller’s invaluable lesson that he can mobilize and unite both the majority and minority communities through his actions and words resonates with the experiences of nurses, who commonly miscommunicate and create more distance among individuals with different backgrounds under pressure.

Analysis

The tale of “Stone Soup” ended in an open and welcoming way, with the village’s residents being in good favour of each other, contributing what they had and sharing a communal meal. This result might be achieved because tourists’ skill in modelling a home feeling and prompting team spirit (Stone Soup Shakespeare, n.d.). Through the Stone Soup story, which involved inviting others to participate, the traveller removed the existing barriers and helped people see their common goal.

Conclusion/Learning

As a nurse, I will use what I have learnt from this story to help others belong to the nursing profession. I will commit to promoting social cooperation and diversity by counterbalancing individual differences. We will strengthen teamwork across different departments and get an opportunity to learn from each other. By creating an environment of open communication, empathy, and shared interest, I can bring into existence a supportive and kind working community in which every member feels highly valued.

Action Plan

To help my peers understand how a professional nursing identity may affect their professional growth and build a feeling of belongingness, I would adopt a mindset of continual learning throughout my career by considering the opportunities available to me to explore and deepen my knowledge about the core attributes of nursing and its ethical concepts. Building communication skills involving listening attentively, empathy, and maintaining interactions with colleagues, patients, and their loved ones respectfully and transparently will be the key to creating trust and encompassing a feeling of belonging. I will foster teamwork and collaboration by being involved in interdisciplinary meetings, providing an open opportunity for sharing expertise and useful resources, encouraging others to make decisions and solve problems as a team, and being aware of everybody’s contribution to this process. The more practised I become, the more I will prioritize mentoring and supporting the new nurses by giving them advice and encouraging them on how to feel belonging within the profession through shared journeys and experiences. Moreover, I will employ my voice in advocating for the regulations and procedures that foster a welcoming, welcoming, and supportive workplace culture, participating in committees, giving feedback to the leadership, and actively contributing by my part to developing a positive environmental climate.
