Ones Who Stay and Fight

The English short story “Ones who stay and fight,” written and published in 2018, employs the imagery of kindness and honesty in a society living in Um-Helat. The story shows an organization trying to free itself from the miseries of being imprisoned by the challenges of daily life. Even though one may not be able to change the system in which one lives, the moral of the story is that one must continue to be active in one’s community and work for change. The story’s main character is a hurt youngster who has been left alone following the death of her parents but refuses to give up and instead finds shelter in the community. Despite being ridiculed and abandoned by the group of people she lives with, she persists. A damaged child is a symbol that, despite the harsh sides of life that have been shown to you, you can still find comfort and shelter if you live in a kind society like that of Um-Helat.

It is also a story of inspiration to today’s life that we should not give up even when facing challenges. The child affected by her father’s death is cared for, educated, and admitted into the enforcement branch of the society that defends Um-Helat from adverse changes in “The Ones Who Stay and Fight.” The young woman matures into a formidable force protecting Um-Helat from the advancing ideals of injustice. The girl is given agency to face what hurt her. This is done by battling against its fundamental cause rather than being confined helplessly in a cage.

Um-Helat is a place bound between three rivers and an ocean. It is an attractive place due to the excellent climate in the area (Jemisin, 2018 pg1). A branch in society has been mandated to protect people against injustice and climate change in Um-Helat. This sector ensures that the fertility of the land and the dignity of Um-Helot are protected by society. In Um-Helat there is no hunger (Jemisin. 2018, pg. 2). Due to a good climate, the community is also on the course of ensuring that their children get what they want in their lives and thus ensuring good continuity of the learned generation. Children have been entitled to the right to get an education in Um-helats society. Society is responsible for taking care of children regardless of whether they belong to them. In the story, the community has taken the responsibility of educating the harmed girl whose parents have left. The force protecting acts of injustice in society ensures that children and everybody are taken care of to the maximum. The staff also provides peace in society and specifically among the UM-helats community. Injustice is not acceptable in this place.

The author narrates that in Um-helats city, children play together. This symbolizes peace in the area. Women in Um-Helat take care of every child without discriminating against them. The people of Um-Helat are very kind; as the author says, “at the days dawning, the children of the city come forth, most wearing wings made for them by their parents and kind old aunties. Not all aunties are aunties, but in UM-Helat, anyone can earn aunt-hood” (Jemisin, 2018. pg. 1). Children in Um-Helat can get food from any neighboring homestead because every woman in the society is willing to take the mother role to every child. It is not a must for a child to sleep in the parent homesteads, but they are allowed to spend time with their neighboring children, and their parents will not question them. The um-Helat society is willing to prove to other societies that injustice can be barred from the vicinity of every human race and that people can love each other (Jemisin 2018, pg.12). The formidable force is behind all this.

The story “One who stays and fights” indicates that people can overcome challenges and fight for freedom as the girl did. This can be achieved through education and hard work. The act of the formidable force taking care of the harmed girl and ensuring that the girl is educated shows a high degree of kindness. Society has also taken part in providing the girl is educated, and thus she is given the privilege of shaping her future and fighting for freedom without restriction. Um-Helat society has prioritized education. After the girl has been educated, she secures herself a promising future, and thus, she will embark and give back to the community. The girl defies all the odds and works her best to become a productive human being in the future, although she has not been brought up and educated by her birth parents.

Conclusion

The story of the ones who stay and fight is an inspirational story of the human race as the people of UM-Helat. People should learn to lift each other the society did to the harmed child. Societies should teach their children the need to be kind and persistent whenever they face challenges and thus fight hard to secure a promising future by defying all the odds.
