The world is evolving quickly, and college education is becoming essential; it is considered a minimum qualification for employment, thereby, success in life. To gain a quality degree, especially in social sciences like Geography, one has to think carefully and start by selecting a good school. After identifying a school, the real issue begins with finding a major where one must consider their interests and personality. Employment in the field is also critical as one should be assured of employment or self-employment after studies. To get a good major, one also has to look at the financial ability and costs of the subjects. The three critical factors when choosing a college major in social sciences are personal interests, employment rates, and the cost of the course.
Firstly, when considering a college major, one must consider their interests, ability, and personality. According to research, personal interest is essential when choosing a career, as people do better in what they are passionate about (Akosah-Twumasi et al., 2018). Apart from being passionate, one must look at their ability and talents. For instance, if one is doing well in mathematics, it is wise to take a mathematics course. A person’s personality is also essential when choosing social science. Working in an environment where one can handle pressure and people is very comfortable, as it is social science. Therefore it is essential to consider e personal interest when selecting a major in social sciences.
The other important factor when selecting social sciences is the employment rate in the field. There are some courses where one will find it challenging to find a job or even employ themselves. The demand for the job must be there, and the labour department should be considering the course (Writers, 2023). Moreover, social sciences is a very employable major, especially geography, where one can work as a geographer and tutor. The government also employs geography and social sciences researchers in different institutions. Therefore when considering a major in social sciences, one has to see the employment rates and the salary.
Finally, the other factor to consider when choosing a major in social sciences is that one has to loan for the cost of the course. Some courses are costly and without scholarships; when doing this, students should be sure they can afford them. Student loans can boost one, but selecting costly courses may make the students drop out of school due to financial issues. Furthermore, if the parent cannot afford school fees, one should get a part-time job at the institution to support their school fees. According to research, many students need help to finish school due to financial issues (Altonji & Zimmerman, 2018). If one wants to do their course comfortably and get the best out of it, they should ensure they have studied well and have enough finances. Private universities are more expensive than public universities, so one must also ensure they can afford it before joining any institution. One must consider the course’s cost when one wants to select a major and complete it successfully.
In conclusion, the world is changing, and students need at least a degree to be able to work, so they should choose a major by considering personality, finances, and employment opportunities. There are many other factors to consider, such as the flexibility of the course, but these are the main ones. Many countries have different employment rates in all subjects; therefore, one must know their country’s employment rate before choosing a major. The other important factor is finances. One should choose a course they can afford and not differ due to low fees. Personal interest and ability are also essential since one may lose morale in their course if it is not their choice. These are some of the factors one should consider before choosing a course in social sciences in this changing world.
