The artwork I have chosen is titled “The Death of Sardanapalus” by Eugene Delacroix. It portrays the demise of Sardanapalus, the legendary Assyrian monarch who, in a final act of defiance against his foes, set himself and his riches on fire. The work, regarded as a masterpiece by Delacroix, is renowned for its dramatic composition and bold color choices. It is currently on exhibit at the Louvre Museum in Paris and was finished in 1827 (“Eugene Delacroix paintings, bio, ideas,” n.d.).
Oil paint was used to create the piece of art on canvas. Delacroix painted paint in thick, observable brushstrokes using a technique called impasto.
