Sociology focuses on investigating the overview formation and structure of various organizations, social unions, and societies and how people come together within such contexts. It involves social revolution, social way of life, social reasons and results of the way human characters. According to the movie directed by Michael Radford in 1984, sociology is viewed in the perception that both the future and the past are under the control of one person. Similarly, both the past and the present are controlled by one person. False and unrealistic information (propaganda) is part of human sociology as portrayed by the inner part of the movie. The movie is worth congratulating for its pretty and good job of giving a true reflection of the application of propaganda and having power and authority over the people. Sociology determines much of human dignity and knowledge, whereby we willingly give up our rights for skilled scientific administration (Porczyński, 2021). One may wonder whether science may solve the human dilemma by substituting obedience for self-knowledge, which has always been an elusive and difficult search. Having full knowledge about science fiction as the critical hostility between science and fiction gives many scenarios, effects and how sociology is truly reflected in our daily lives concerning the movie.
To begin with, sociology majorly investigates how the social world affects our way of thinking, feeling and acting. Humans can think and have the capacity to act as their nature. However, sometimes this may not be the case. Sometimes human requires guidance in their various social duties. Therefore, panoptic, whereby the concept of disciplinary is brought to life in the manner of specifying observation point of tower located within a geographical area of prisons, is introduced. The architecture established enables the guards to secretly watch those engaged in their various activities without noticing being watched. In the movie, the panopticon was used metaphorically by commanders in tracing the surveillance habits of disciplinarians through the use of a large screen in front of the workplace (Porczyński, 2021). The concept of the panopticon in sociology boosts the keeping of inmates to team up together in every which they are engaged. Hence it plays a key role in sociology.
Secondly, working in groups, one of the areas in sociology, ensures team and achievement of a given targeted goal of the jobs we see in the movie are monotonous. It enables people to engage in the same jobs according to their area of specialization for higher quality results. However, this is not the case in a movie directed by Michael Radford. Ironically, there are no single non-standard jobs completely for the inmate. In the movie, all the inmates are engaged in monotonous common jobs, except Charrington’s job. The case of Charrington is quite different since he is allowed to own a thrift shop and exempted from putting like others blue overalls did but instead puts a suit. The shop, however, belongs to one of the police officers. The situation, however, makes other inmates feel like they are looked down upon and treated inhumanly by exposing them to harder monotonic jobs, unlike Charrington. In this situation, sociology is not embraced since there is a lack of treatment of the inmates in the labor division.
Sociology and post-industrial society work together to improve our society’s economy. Despite sociology’s concentration on the social relationships between individuals, post-industrial society does not. On the other hand, post-industrial society emphasizes the many stages of social development in the case that the income generated by manufacturers is less than that of the economy’s service sector (Singh, S. Rape vs. Patriarchy: A Sociological Analysis). Because of this, the study of sociology shows that post-industrial society is characterized by an economic shift away from manufacturing toward services, which is linked to further societal changes. I want to mention Daniel Bell’s “The Coming of Post-Industrial Society” towards the film’s end. A post-industrial civilization, according to Bell, is an information-based society. The government shapes information on this planet. So, it improves social control by this. We see how Smith manipulates the past to create a new reality. People go about their daily routines believing that the information they’ve been fed is accurate. Therefore, it is essential in sociology that the post-industrial society plays no assumed or taken-for-granted role.
Surveillance; fear of being observed to be doing anything improper. Additionally, criminology being part of sociology, concentrates on the way crime practices has altered its usage of using threats to inflict conflicts with the fear of getting physical punishment for the purpose of controlling via the surveillance.
