The Historical Event
My chosen historical event is the 19th Amendment women’s suffrage movement. This momentous event was important because it gave women the right to vote. It was a big win for people fighting for women’s rights for a long time. The passing of the 19th Amendment was a turning point in American history for women’s rights. It was also a big step toward gender equality. The movement significantly affected women, who became more politically and socially aware, leading to more social justice and more requests for women in the following decades. Both the Women’s Suffrage Campaign and the Nineteenth Amendment were watershed milestones in the history of the United States. Both are now considered critical victories in the ongoing battle for gender equality.
The Women’s Suffrage Campaign and the Nineteenth Amendment also significantly affected the more significant civil rights movement in the United States. There was no way to separate the fight for women’s right to vote from other social justice movements of the time, like the fight for racial equality. Many suffragists were also interested in labour rights and temperance. In the United States, women did not get the right to vote until 1920. The victory of the Women’s Suffrage Movement and the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment paved the way for future progress in the fight for equal rights for men and women and to protect women’s rights. Getting women the right to vote was a big step that allowed them to participate fully in politics. It paved the way for later progress on equal pay and eliminating workplace discrimination. Both the Women’s Suffrage Campaign and the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment are essential turning points in the history of the United States fight for social justice and equality. They are important because they remind us that we need to fight for the rights of everyone, no matter their gender, color, or anything else that makes them different.

Tetrault, L. (2021). When Women Won the Right to Vote: A History Unfinished: Keynote Address, 68th Annual Utah State Historical Society Conference. Utah Historical Quarterly, 89(3), 180-197.- This book looks at the movement’s beginnings and disproves the popular idea that it all started with the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848. The author argues that this is a myth. Also covered is the impact the movement had on the world.
Cahill, C. D. (2021). Why They Marched: Untold Stories of the Women Who Fought for the Right to Vote. This book details the Women’s Suffrage Movement and the problems women faced when they fought for the right to vote. It accomplishes this by presenting the narratives and points of view of various suffragists, each of whom contributed uniquely to the fight for the freedom of working-class women, women of color, and other oppressed groups to vote. The suffragists whose stories and points of view are presented in this book include Lucy Burns, a suffragist in the early 20th century. Their efforts are only sometimes given the credit they deserve.
These resources include information on the Women’s Suffrage Movement and the fight for voting rights for women in the United States. Working-class women and women of color, whose views on the suffrage movement are often left out of traditional accounts of the movement, are two suffragists whose lives and points of view are looked at in great detail in Cahill’s book. On the other hand, Tetrault provides a historical evaluation of the suffrage battle in his keynote lecture. He emphasizes the critical events and individuals that led to the adoption of the 19th Amendment. Despite these variations, the primary objective of these publications is the same: to shed light on the struggle for women’s suffrage and the many suffragists involved in it. In addition, they both emphasize the need to recognize the variety within the suffrage movement and draw attention to the successes of underrepresented groups.
While selecting sources, it is necessary to evaluate their authority, relevance, and accuracy in addressing the topic or problem that is the focus of the study. In this particular situation, both sources are relevant, and together they provide sufficient information for evaluating the development of the American Women’s Suffrage Movement. The selection of these sources may have been motivated by the pursuit of credible and trustworthy literature on the subject. Additionally, the choice of these sources may have been inspired by selecting those that provide a complete picture of the suffrage movement, including its significant events, characters, and diverse suffragists’ points of view.
Research question
My research question is, “How did race affect African American women’s experience throughout the women’s suffrage movement.” It is vital to research both primary and secondary sources if one wants to understand the part that race played in the suffrage movement and the experiences of African American women. In addition to this, it will investigate how race intersected with other factors, including social class and gender, to affect the suffrage movement and its outcomes. This investigation will contribute to our comprehension of the ongoing fight for equality and justice in American society by illuminating the myriad ways in which African American women’s participation in the Women’s Suffrage Movement both harmed and bolstered those women. In doing so, this research will help us better appreciate the complexities of that fight.
